Having overcome Blue Star SC from Sri Lanka and Abahani Limited from Bangladesh, the Green, and Maroons have been placed in Group D of the AFC Cup 2022-23. Their group consists of fellow I-League team Gokulam Kerala FC, Bashundhara Kings from Bangladesh, and Maldivian side Maziya S&RC.
Although they suffered a 4-2 defeat in their opening match against Gokulam Kerala FC, the Mariners bounced back and emerged victorious in their remaining matches to finish atop their group. Advancing to the Inter-Zonal playoff round, they faced Malaysian team Kuala Lumpur City FC but were defeated 3-1 at home by the eventual finalists.
With the inclusion of new players in the 2022-23 season and the potential addition of several more during the summer transfer window, the team's Spanish coach will aim for nothing less than success on the continental stage.
The squad will rely on the contributions of foreign players such as Dimitri Petratos, Hugo Boumous, and Brendan Hamill, as well as the talents of domestic players like Ashique Kuruniyan, Asish Rai, and Vishal Kaith.
