Danushka Gunathilaka, the top batter for Sri Lanka, was arrested for rape charges in Sydney amid the T20 World Cup 2022. He is charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The left hander travelled with the Sri Lanka team for the T20 World Cup in Australia and was ruled out of the tournament with an injury. He, however, remained with the squad despite being officially replaced.

“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022,” a New South Wales police statement said. “As part of ongoing investigations, a crime scene examination was undertaken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday.

“He was taken to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The Sri Lankan national was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court via AVL today”, the statement further stated.

The Australian reported, “Police confirmed the international cricket star was arrested at a Sussex Street hotel about 1am on Sunday over the alleged incident in Sydney’s east last week. Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command commenced a joint investigation following reports a 29-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted at a home in Rose Bay.”

Gunathilaka has been also involved in a similar incident in 2018 when Sri Lankan cricket suspended him for misconduct. The suspension comes after a Norwegian woman has accused Gunathilaka’s friend of raping her in a hotel room where Gunathilaka was present. Gunathilaka and his friend took two Norwegian women to the hotel where the player was staying in Colombo in the early hours of Sunday. One of the women later accused the second man, a British passport-holder of Sri Lankan origin, of raping her and police arrested him

Then, though, the police dismissed Gunathilaka’s involvement,  staying that the player had no personal involvement in the case in which one of his friends had been arrested.

Sri Lanka team left to Colombo this morning after their campaign gets over with a close encounter against England . They travelled their home without Danushka Gunathalika as scheduled.
