Sri Lanka continues to suffer setbacks in their chase to reach the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup as top-order left handed batter Danushka Gunathilaka has suffered a left hamstring tear and is being ruled out of the remaining of the T20 World Cup. He also missed the Srilanka’s second game UAE game along with Pramod Madushan and underwent scans on hamstring injuries that was confirmed on the official website of the International Cricket Council.

Ashen Bandara, who was initially in the travelling reserves has been drafted into the Srilanka’s 15 member squad as the replacement of Danushka. Ashen made his T20 debut against West Indies at Coolidge in 2021. He has played four T20I matches for Srilanka and scored total 84 runs with an average of 28. Overall, he has an experience of playing 41 T20 matches and has a tally of total 820 runs in those.

The loss of the experienced left hander Gunathilaka will be a huge blow for Sri Lanka in batting department who has already lost some of his key bowlers owing to their injuries. Earlier the side lost the services of Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka who were also confirmed to be ruled out of the rest of the matches. Kasun Rajitha and Binura Fernando replaced them respectively in Srilanka’s fifteen member squad. Chameera was the star performer in their thumping win over the UAE having scalped three wickets and giving away only 15 runs in his full quota of four overs.

The Lankan Lions completely outclassed UAE in their last do and die fixture that proved to be vital for the progress of the 2022 Asia Cup winners. Now they will be up against Netherlands on October 20 and this will be an another do and die match for Srilanka to qualify for the second round of the marquee event.
