In another untimely issue of fitness for India, Deepak Chahar is ruled out of the remaining two ODI matches against South Africa on 9th and 11th October. He had a stiffness in his back after the third and final T20I against South Africa in Indore and did not feature in India’s Playing XI in the first ODI in Lucknow.
The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Washington Sundar as replacement for Deepak Chahar for the remainder of the ODI series. Sundar last played an ODI for India in February 2022,he has overall played four matches in the format for India and picked up five wickets and scored 57 runs.
According to a BCCI statement, Chahar will now head back to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and will be monitored by the Medical Team there. The extent of the injury or the timeline for recovery is not known yet.
Chahar has made a comeback to the competitive cricket recently only in August against Zimbabwe having already been out of action for six months this year owing to injury. He tore a quadricep muscle during India’s T20Is against West Indies in February, then he picked up a back issue while undergoing rehab for the quad injury at the NCA. He also missed the IPL that followed, and was completely out of the action till India’s tour of Zimbabwe.
India already trail South Africa in the series 1-0, so both remaining games will be must-wins for them to win the series. They will play the second ODI in Ranchi on October 9, 2022 and will play the final ODI of the series in New Delhi on October 11, 2022.
India’s updated ODI squad: Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Mohd.
