Paul Pogba’s elder brother Mathias Pogba has been taken into Police custody as a part of investigation procedure of an alleged blackmailing plot.
Juventus and French international Paul Pogba’s elder brother, Mathias Pogba, has reportedly been detained and questioned by Police after the reports of Paul Pogba being a target of extortion and threats surfaced a few days ago.
A statement was issued by the Juventus midfielder around 2 weeks ago, wherein he made claims of being extorted and threatened by an ‘organized gang’. This statement came after his elder brother Mathias posted a video on his social media promising ‘great revelations’ about the French international.
Mathias Pogba said he believed “the French, Italian and English public, my brother’s fans, and even more the French national team, the Juventus team, my brother’s teammates and his sponsors deserve to know certain things”.
“Mathias Pogba presented himself to the investigators in the early afternoon and was taken into custody,” a source close to the investigation said on Wednesday. Three other people are also in custody.
The formal investigation probe will be looking into Paul Pogba’s allegations on a gang trying to extort and threaten him since March. The Juventus midfielder paid €100,000 euros to that group in the spring, judicial sources told Reuters this month.
Mathias Pogba has already denied the allegations through a statement from his lawyer, Richard Arbib. “Taking into account how the affair has evolved and the huge media attention surrounding it, Mathias Pogba strongly insists he knows nothing about any extortion attempt against his brother, Paul Pogba,” read the lawyer’s statement.
“It is clear that the difficulties the Pogba family are experiencing are the result of outside threats which the justice authorities, who are already involved, will evaluate. Mathias Pogba, who wishes above all to calm the situation with his brother, will from now on only speak with the investigating magistrates, should it be necessary.”
Tough time for Paul Pogba continues, as his return to the Old Lady was ruined with him picking up a knee injury just a few days after arriving at Turin. He has successfully undergone the knee surgery and hopes to maintain his place in France’s starting squad for the World Cup to be played in Qatar later this year.
