Southern Brave – Team Notes

Batting Options: If George Garton isn’t dropped, 9; otherwise, 8

LHB Options: Only 1 in the top 5

  • Opportunity Alert – Brings Mason Crane and, in particular, Liam Dawson’s brilliantly restrictive slow left-arm spin into play.

Main Bowling Options: 5

Support Bowling Options: 2 (Marcus Stoinis, Tim David)

Spin trio: Wrist spin and off-spin covered; no SLAO

In Form: James Vince, Jake Lintott

Out of Form: George Garton

Express Pace: Available

Slow ball variations: Available

Elite New ball value: With George Garton not in form, not available; Michael Hogan, if chosen, can fill in rather well.

Big Name(s) on the bench: None

Potential Changes: Unless they decide to drop George Garton for form, none; if they do, George Garton out, Michael Hogan in.

As previously discussed, George Garton has only recently recovered from a lengthy illness. And it’s had an impact, both in his Blast performance and in the first game here. The 25-year-old’s poor bowling performance was one of the main reasons they lost to Birmingham Phoenix, and if the Brave management believes he isn’t yet ready for top-flight cricket, he may be rested again for Michael Hogan, who impressed in his 100 debut against Welsh Fire.

Or, given how successful left-arm off-spinners have been at Southampton, they could bring in Dan Moriarty, giving James Vince a quality option to bowl at the Spirit top 3 and especially at Maxwell, who has a history of struggling against the bowling type.

  • Glenn Maxwell vs SLAO since 2017 (Avg/SR): 15 dismissals (22/124)
  • Glenn Maxwell vs SLAO in 2022 (Avg/SR): 6 dismissals (7/119)

London Spirit – Team Notes

Batting Options – 8

LHB Options: Only one in top 5

Main Bowling Options: 5

Support Bowling Options: 3 (Glenn Maxwell, Ravi Bopara, Kieron Pollard)

Spin trio: Covered (Wrist spin, SLAO and offspin all in)

In form: Eoin Morgan, Kieron Pollard, Nathan Ellis, Chris Wood

Out of Form: None

Potential changes: Zak Crawley out (If he has left the Spirit to join the England squad for the series against South Africa), Daniel Bell-Drummond in

During the toss yesterday, Northern Superchargers captain Faf du Plessis stated that Matthew Potts was unavailable for selection because he had left to join the England Test squad. If this is correct, then all members of England’s Test squad will be unavailable for selection starting today. One of them is Zak Crawley.

The Rose Bowl, Southampton – Venue Notes

Southampton is one of England’s biggest cricket grounds, with no major Under 75m boundaries and large straight 82m boundaries. As a result, batters must make solid contact in order to clear the boundaries.

In terms of general scoring, you can’t expect runfests here, thanks in part to the large boundaries, so expect average first innings scores in the 150-155 range. It was 139 last year, but that was also due to opponents facing an in-form home bowling unit and batters figuring out how to approach the format. This year should be better, with the Brave bowlers not being as sharp and batters having a better understanding of the format.

At The Rose Bowl, Southampton (The 100 Men 2021 numbers):

  • Average first innings score – 139 (6th)
  • Average 4s 1st inn – 10 (7th)
  • Avg 6s 1st inn – 5.2 (5th)
  • Avg runs PP 1st inn – 39 (2rd)
  • Avg runs in Death 1st inn – 42 (5th)

At The Rose Bowl, Southampton (The Blast numbers – Last 3 years)

  • Average first innings score – 168 (5th)
  • Average 4s 1st inn – 14 (4th)
  • Avg 6s 1st inn – 5.7 (4th)
  • Avg runs PP 1st inn – 35 (8th)
  • Avg runs in Death 1st inn – 52 (2nd)

James Vince is not only the leading run-scorer at Southampton since 2017, but he is also the only player to have scored more than 500 runs at the venue and one of only two players to have averaged 30+ runs per wicket among the top ten scorers during this time period.

Since 2017, Chris Wood, Liam Dawson, and Mason Crane have all been in the top five leading wicket takers list.

It is worth noting that all four of these players are from Hampshire.

Indibet Cricket Predictions

  • Southern Brave to win the match
  • Glenn Maxwell Over 28.5 Player Performance Points (if Dan Moriarty isn’t named in the Southern Brave starting XI)

Fantasy Corner

Base Team: James Vince, Chris Jordan, Jordan Thompson, Nathan Ellis, Jake Lintott, James Fuller (especially if George Garton doesn’t play), Liam Dawson

Top Support Options: Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Eoin Morgan

Differentials: James Fuller (15%), Chris Wood (14%)

Top Budget Picks: Jordan Thompson, Liam Dawson

Top C/VC options: James Vince, Jordan Thompson

Differential C/VC options: Chris Jordan (2%), James Fuller (1%)

Fantasy Notes & Tips

  • If George Garton does not play, James Fuller’s fantasy value skyrockets because he becomes the side’s only pace bowling all-rounder. The 32-year-old was a big part of Hampshire’s title-winning run this year, and he’ll know his way around Southampton because it’s his home track in the county circuit.
  • Again, if George Garton does not play, Chris Jordan will move up the batting order, and he has been in excellent batting form recently. This boosts the fantasy value of the England star.
  • It has not been an easy scoring venue in the powerplay, particularly under lights. Out of all The 100 venues, this has been the most difficult venue at the Blast in the last three years. As a result, rely on high-quality new ball bowlers.
  • Go big on Hampshire players James Vince, James Fuller, Liam Dawson, Chris Wood, Mason Crane, and Nathan Ellis.
  • The venue has big boundaries, so rely on four hitters rather than six hitters.
