Prithvi Shaw

From reintroducing Sanju Samson to selecting Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda, a number of batters have been given opportunities in the last year under the new management of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid. However, one name continues to slip through the cracks, raising the million-dollar question in the Indian cricket circuit: Why is Prithvi Shaw not getting a chance?

Commentators and insiders believe it is due to the selectors’ lack of confidence in the 22-year-old’s fitness. And former Indian fielding coach R Sridhar, who was part of the team that saw Prithvi Shaw make his ODI debut in 2020, should know a thing or two about it. If he believes in the same, Shaw’s fitness could be the reason why he isn’t even being picked in the second-string squads.

“The reason why Shaw has fallen down the pecking order is first, his fitness,” R Sridhar said in an interview with I’m not sure why he’s not able to make it into these squads. He started off the IPL well, but slowly as the tournament progresses, his performances fell apart a little bit, if I might say so.

“Maybe we are being harsh on the kid. We need to give him time. He is obviously young and needs to get his act together in terms of his work ethic.”

In his last ODI under the previous team management, against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui, Prithvi Shaw was run out in the 12th over of the innings batting first, unable to complete an easy two runs on offer. And, despite getting a start in all six of his ODIs (with the lowest score of 13), he has not lasted long enough to make a 50+ score in any of them.
