Fantasy Angles and Notes

  • This match screams for a 7 to 4 combination in favour of Australia, not only because they are the clear favourites but also because Barbados does not offer more than two attractive picks on whom we can rely on.
  • Six base players who are relatively easy picks you must have in all your teams – Deandra Dottin, Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney, Hayley Matthews, Tahlia McGrath and Jess Jonassen.
  • Kycia Knight scored 62 runs in the last game versus Pakistan, but Barbados will still highly depend on two of its main all-rounders – Dottin and Matthews – if they need to have a chance against a stronger team like Australia.
  • Hayley Matthews has gotten the better of Alyssa Healy once in T20Is and twice in the WBBL. She has also dismissed Ashleigh Gardner once in T20Is and once in the WBBL. Shakera Selman has dismissed Beth Mooney once in T20Is. Jess Jonassen has dismissed Matthews once in T20Is, while King and Gardner have dismissed her once each in the WBBL.
  • Dottin and Matthews opening together will not be a wise move against a team like Australia if one of them gets dismissed in the early stages of the match. Kycia Knight should open with Matthews as she did in the recent T20 Blaze matches.
  • With Alyssa Healy in poor form and Kycia Knight scoring 62 in the last game, the wicketkeeper slot is in a tricky position as we expect Knight to struggle against this Aussie bowling attack. We will consider balancing the two in our teams.
  • SL Team 1 reasoning – It is a relatively very safe team. We have taken risks with two differentials in Alana King (instead of Alyssa Healy) and Aaliyah Alleyne (instead of Shamilia Connell). Alleyne is mainly in because of her performance in the T20 Blaze and to move a little away from the match template.
  • ML Team 2(If WI bat first) reasoning – We have taken a massive risk in dropping a big player like Ashleigh Gardner here. Jess Jonassen is in hot form, so the captaincy choice was not difficult, and we have taken a risk in vice-captaining Alana King, a leg spinner, as we expect her to pick at least one wicket if she bowls in the first innings of the match. With three bowlers and three Australian batters set, we had a choice between Gardner or McGrath. We decided to go with McGrath even though she bowled just a single over in the last game. She is in because she bats at No.4 and can bowl more than one over in this match.
  • ML Team 1(Preferred if AUS bat first) reasoning – With a target to chase in sight, we expect Matthews and Dottin to play more comfortably and also pick a few wickets between them when they bowl in the first innings. We did not include Healy due to her form and record against Matthews. We still have three Australia bowlers for the safety net, and if the duo are dismissed in case of a collapse of West Indies batting.
  • In the Grand Leagues – we had to include Healy as a captain in at least one of our teams. The casualty in both GL teams is Beth Mooney, but we hope the all-rounders can make up the points if she scores some runs.
