BGMI Banned In India

BGMI has been removed from App Store and Playstore in India. The game which was released last year has been pulled from these popular application stores. The game was a relaunched version of the popular battle royale game PUBG Mobile. After PUBG Mobile was banned by the Indian government due to security concerns, the developers of the game Krafton rebranded and relaunched the game for the Indian market in July 2021.

This news comes as a shock to the Indian esports community where a large number of esports players are committed to the battle-royale game. Mobile gaming in India was growing since the days of Clash of Clans but after the release of PUBG Mobile, the sports-crazy nation saw unprecedented growth in competitive gaming. The gaming market as a whole grew at a compound annual growth rate of 38% in 2019-2020. Especially during the Covid 19 pandemic, the player count saw a gigantic rise. However, due to military skirmishes between India and China on the Indo-China border, PUBG Mobile was banned by the Indian government. The developers of the game Krafton relaunched the game for India after rebranding it as BGMI. Since its release last year BGMI has boosted the growth of esports in the country with some big tournaments like BGMI Pro Series, BGMI Series, and the recently concluded BGMI Masters Series.

If reports are to be believed BGMI has been pulled again from the application stores at the request of the government. As of now, we don’t know if this move is permanent or whether the game will make a comeback. A Techcrunch report has confirmed that Apple and Google have taken the decision at the behest of the Indian government. TechCrunch was able to get a statement from a Google spokesperson who confirmed: “On receipt of the order, following established process, we have notified the affected developer and have blocked access to the app that remained available on the Play Store in India.” Apple has not released any statement as of now.

A few days ago, Krafton the developers of BGMI said that “they are aiming to become more than a gaming company in India.” The developers have invested millions of dollars in the country to bolster the gaming industry in India. The latest news of BGMI’s removal has shocked everyone as we wait for an official statement from the Indian government and Krafton.
