Cristiano Ronaldo is determined to leave Manchester United this summer – as per reports. Atletico Madrid have been linked with the former Real Madrid star but his potential arrival is being heavily criticized by the club faithful.
As per The Times, Cristiano Ronaldo, after a meeting with the Manchester United supremos at their Carrington training base, has refused to change his stance. The Portugal international still wants to leave the club this summer after it failed to qualify for the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage.
Ronaldo, who is yet to miss a Champions League campaign in his professional career, is determined to move to a club that can offer him the chance to play in the competition, fueling his desire to cut ties with the Red Devils.
Atletico Madrid were linked with the 37-year-old former Real Madrid star in recent days. However, echoing the response of president Enrique Cerezo, one of the fan groups has released a statement asking the club to move away from the rumored transfer.
“With the possibility that the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo is something more than a simple rumour without any basis, we show our complete rejection to a hypothetical signing by our club, as we also made public last July 19 via social media,” it read.
“The mentioned player represents the antithesis of the values which make up the identity of our Atleti, which are the effort, generosity, and humility.
“Even with the possibility, not probability, that a player in clear decline like Cristiano Ronaldo could assure a trophy, we would not accept his signing.
“The sense of belonging to our Atletico feeling is not something within his reach, unfortunately for him, so that he would never be able to achieve our love or recognition.
“So, we ask the club to reject his possible signing, if that is what they have considered, in any moment.”
Ronaldo has been linked with Bayern Munich and Chelsea, too, in the past; both clubs, however, rejected the possibility of a transfer this summer. Reports also claimed that his agent, Jorge Mendes, presented a proposal to let the 37-year-old forward leave on loan this summer to a Champions League club, while renewing his deal with Manchester United by another year.
