Despite seeing his Manchester United reign get off to a flying start, manager Erik ten Hag has sent a warning to the club board, asking for more strengthening in key areas ahead of the new season.
New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has warned the board that, without bringing the right personnel in before the end of the summer transfer window, the team’s results will suffer. The Red Devils have signed Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, and Lisandro Martinez so far and are in talks with FC Barcelona for midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Nevertheless, the Dutchman also praised his team’s performances in their recent successes – 4-0 over Liverpool, 4-1 over Melbourne Victory, and 3-1 over Crystal Palace – on their tour of Thailand and Australia.
“We sign Eriksen for the midfield, we are really happy with that,” he said. “I am really happy with the performance of the midfield and offense at this moment. But I also know this season, a lot of games, World Cup, so we need more options, we have a good team, we need a good squad to get the right results at the end of the season.”
Ten Hag has called for reinforcements in the attack specifically. The former Ajax tactician is yet to welcome Cristiano Ronaldo into the fold, the Portugal talisman still missing from club duty due to ongoing personal issues, and thus faces a shortage of offensive options.
“That is a reason, but also the number of games. You need more options in offense,” he said. “I think it’s vital if you want to get success, the season is really long. But we also have still time to fill that in.”
Midfield, however, does not seem to be the Dutchman’s concern at present. Ten Hag singled out the performances of Brazil international Fred, claiming that while he has taken well to the role, he can do better.
“In the moment he is playing in the role as connecter, defending to offense. He is playing the role quite well. I am satisfied with his performance, with his improvement,” he said. “I think he can even be better. I will support him in that. He also brings energy in the team by his attitude.”
Manchester United play Aston Villa next in Perth, before facing Atletico Madrid in Oslo, and Rayo Vallecano in Manchester on the eve of the new Premier League season.
