Sanju Samson vs Mohammed Siraj - Cricket Twitter is divided

Sanju Samson’s excellent diving effort stopped what would have been 5 wides in Mohammed Siraj’s final over to keep India in the game.

Fans and experts both recognised the effort, though some exaggerated it.

The counter-argument to glorifying Samson appears to be that doing so takes the focus away from Mohammed Siraj’s outstanding bowling performance.

Some of these plaudits are, indeed, exaggerated. Saying ‘Sanju Samson won the game’ ignores India’s sublime opening partnership and the brilliant bowling effort of the Indian bowlers in the second half of the innings to turn the game around after Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks threatened to run away with it.

Simply put, without the efforts of Shubman Gill, Shikhar Dhawan, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna, India would not have made it to Ball 49.5. The victory is, therefore, a combination of all of these, with Samson’s effort, while commendable and exceptional, being the least important.
