Esports will officially be a sport in the upcoming Commonwealth Games where it has been included as a demonstration event. Competitive gaming has seen an unprecedented growth in the last couple of years, esports as it is known around the world where players participate in huge tournaments which are watched by millions of people. In the upcoming edition of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, esports will be featured for the first time. The international event will see various teams from different countries participating in the inaugural Commonwealth Esports Championship.
The games that will be featured in the Championship will be Dota 2, e-Foootball by Konami and Rocket League. Players from around the world will take part in mouthwatering contests which will be held parallely with the Commonwealth Games.

Indian athletes have played a significant role in Commonwealth Games through the years. Players from our country will contest in Dota 2 and Rocket League after securing qualification through the South Asia regional qualifiers.

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Dame Louise Martin said on their website, “I am delighted that we are announcing the first Commonwealth Esports Championships and Commonwealth Esports Forum to take place in Birmingham this summer.”

“Esports is continuing to grow dramatically in terms of popularity and participation, particularly amongst young people, and we are continuing to look at ways to explore how it can align with the Commonwealth Sports Movement,” he added.

The whole event will be organised in a partnership between the CGF and the Global Esports Federation (GEF). The GEF’s president Chris Chan said, “We are proud to establish yet another first for the world’s esports community. The inaugural Commonwealth Esports Championships comes hot on the heels of the first-ever Singapore 2021 Global Esports Games staged in December 2021, capturing more than 500 million views from around the world.

The Commonwealth Esports Championships offers our community another exciting event in the global esports calendar. We look forward to welcoming the esports community to Birmingham in August.”

The Esports Championships in the Commonwealth Games 2022 will also have an open category and a women’s only category which will further diversify esports. For the first time in its history esports will bask in the glory of an international multi-sport event.
