Daily Cricket News Updates, July 4

2:55 PM (IST): Former English spinner Graeme Swann believes that Indian commentators are too harsh when assessing Virat Kohli’s batting. He called the delivery that knocked Kohli out ‘unplayable.’

The 43-year-old stated: “You can say what you want, I don’t care who is batting in any period of Test history, if you can survive that delivery you are very lucky. That is unplayable.”

He went on to say that whether you play it on the front or back foot, that ball is a “ripsnorter.”

2:00 PM (IST): On Day 3 of the ongoing Test match between India and England, Virender Sehwag, commentating for Sony, compared Virat Kohli’s celebration to that of a ‘Chamiya’, sparking outrage on social media.

Sehwag also tweeted that Bairstow began hitting boundaries after Kohli sledged him.

The former Indian opener has yet to respond to the growing backlash.

12.20 PM (IST): Mohammed Siraj believes that the extra pace in the Indian bowling attack was crucial in the game. He said at the end of Day 3: “When we saw the New Zealand series, we realised that our every bowler is 140-plus and they didn’t have that. We had that ability and also, we also had played against England last year. So that was our plus point, as were aware of their weak points and that is why we got the success.”

Siraj also spoke about regaining the lost outswing. “After the IPL I lost the outswing so I worked hard on the swing. It might look great to bowl outswing but it might not fetch you too many wickets. So I had to work on bowling inswing as well.”

12:05 PM (IST): Jonny Bairstow downplayed the sledging incident between himself and Virat Kohli, saying it was “literally nothing”. He told the press after the end of Day 3: “As I mentioned earlier, there was literally nothing. We’ve been fortunate to play against each other for ten years. So, I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to have dinner. Don’t worry about it.”

Earlier in the day, Kohli’s attempts to get under Bairstow’s skin proved ineffective, as the 32-year-old scored his third century in three games.
